Graham Segger’s presentation, and the book it is drawn from, explore the relationship between the people who have lived in the central Niagara community of Upper Fonthill and the land they have occupied. It could be described as a genealogy of the land. A blend of history and geography, the presentation starts with the glacial era formation of the high ground and traces its occupation over the last five thousand years, with a particular focus on the period 1780 to the present.
This presentation provides a fascinating study of the changes of ownership and use of a relatively small area of land, bringing in a myriad of historical anecdotes and an interesting cast of characters. Graham’s research leans heavily on Ontario land registration records sourced from both Onland digital copies and the original copy books. He will provide a few tips for effectively using both resources while outlining this case study on how to research past property ownership in Ontario. The book also presents a reasonable amount of genealogical detail about the families involved, though that will not be the focus of the presentation. Graham will provide a selection of vignettes about the struggles of hard-working settlers, conflicts over land, political infighting, and yes, even a dash of vice.
